A pilot study was conducted in 2012 to ensure that the population study was possible to implement, and in 2014, the major SCAPIS study was initiated. The aim of the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS) is to predict and prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD) and COPD. SCAPIS will recruit and investigate approximately 30,000 men and women aged 50 to 64 years with detailed imaging and functional analyses of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems. The Swedish Cardiopulmonary Bioimage Study (SCAPIS) combines the use of new imagine technologies, advances in large-scale 'comics' and epidemiological analyses to extensively characterize a Swedish cohort of 30 000 men and women aged between 50 and 64 years. SCAPIS är en befolkningsstudie där sex universitet har inkluderat totalt 30 000 slumpmässigt utvalda personer från Sverige mellan 50 och 64 år från 2013 till 2018. Syftet med SCAPIS är att kunna identifiera individuella risker för exempelvis stroke, KOL, plötsligt hjärtstopp, hjärtinfarkt och andra hjärtsjukdomar. Med ett enkelt blodprov ska det gå att avgöra vem som riskerar att drabbas av sjukdom i hjärta, kärl eller lungor.
